Chapter 1

What Is Teamfight Tactics?

TFT is an auto-battler — 8 players all share the same lobby, buy champions from a shared pool, place them on a hexagonal board, and watch them fight automatically. Your job is strategy, not reflexes.

🏟️

The Board

A 7-column × 4-row hex grid. You can hold up to 9 champions on the board (your level). Position matters — placement decides who gets targeted first.

Wisps (Set 18)

Set 18's signature mechanic. A Wisp appears in every other shop, in the rightmost slot, and can be bought once per round during planning. It grants a one-off benefit — gold, XP, an item, a champion, a combat buff, or a gamble.

Carousel Rounds

Every few stages a carousel appears with free champions + items. Players pick in reverse HP order (weakest picks first). This is a great equaliser — don't ignore it.

PvE Rounds

Odd-numbered stages start with a PvE monster round. Winning drops loot — items, gold, or champions. These rounds don't deal player damage if you lose.

PvP Rounds

You fight a random opponent. Win = they lose HP (based on surviving champ levels). Lose = you lose HP. Last player standing wins.

Stage Structure

Stages 1-2 are early. Stage 3 is mid-game. Stages 4-5+ are late. Most games finish around Stage 6-7. Plan your team around Stage 4.

Placement & LP

Top 4 = win (positive LP). Bottom 4 = loss. 1st place gets the most LP. In ranked mode, consistency matters more than going for 1st every game.

Tip: You share the champion pool with 7 others. If everyone rushes the same 3-cost carry, none of them will hit 3-stars. Play what others aren't playing.
